TEASER
As I entered the garden, the smell of succulent roses and jasmine infused me. I continued upon an emerald and ruby path, glinting like a wine-filled goblet. Gliding over pearls and bright quartz, I headed for the waterfalls, the soft lining of moss caressing my feet.
My heart faltered. He was human.

Chapter Six
LEAVING FAY ISLAND
I met my father and the others at the gates to our city. He had decided we would be safe leaving by boat. The portal was quick, but there was no guarantee a human would not see.
He pointed to a pocket deep inside the small purse I would carry. “I have concealed currency for you, but if there is a need for more, there are accounts set up all through Scotland that you can draw money out of. When you return, you will have to use magic to find the island.
Be careful. Do not let anyone see, or the Gods forbid, follow. Be swift in your return, Daughter. We shall miss you.” Father embraced me., then turned to the others. “Take care of yourself and the women, Jack. Aine, guide her as best you can. She may need your sight. I am counting on you both.” Father kissed my forehead and stepped away.
“Yes, Aine. Guard her virtue well. I do not wish to have my bride pregnant with another man’s babe,” Aidan yelled from above us.
One of these days, he is going to push me too far and I will hurt him. I ignored Aidan and turned to Father and Fearghus. “Take care yourself. I shall miss you. Fearghus, I hope to restore your faith in me, and bring back my true power.”
“We shall see, Princess. When you arrive in Ireland, you will take a plane to Inverness, Scotland. A man will be waiting for you. He does not know your true self, of course. He believes you to be a noblewoman, so behave as such.”
“Yes, Fearghus. I shall not embarrass you or my people. How will we know him?”
“His name is Kyle, and he will carry a miniature of the Goddess Morrigan. Ask to see it before you follow him.”
I nodded. Wait was it possible, Kyle? It could not be him. Fearghus frowned as he walked away. Not wanting any other surprises, I marched down to the pier and stepped into the boat.
The motorboat was sleek with a powerful engine in the stern. I overheard it had been purchased for speed and maneuverability, not to spend time in. It looked new and unused. Who had bought it, and how, if we are now not allowed contact with the mortal realm?
Father blessed us, as we cast off. “The island will be in the same spot for a fortnight. Good luck, Shayla. May the Gods be with you.”
It only took a couple of hours to reach Ireland. Father and Aunt Brigit must have moved Fay Island as close as they dared, while we slept. None of us spoke. Even the usually garrulous guards chose to remain silent. I had plenty of time to think about Kyle, but I hoped the Gods were not so cruel. Would he be waiting for us at the airport? How would he react? I yearn for him more than anyone or anything, but his life is more precious than any of that.
The motorboat banked and we got out.
“Now that we are alone, will you tell me why you were so stunned over the man we will meet?” Jack’s voice vibrated with the frustration I felt. Maybe he knew something I did not. Being 250 should have benefits.
“It was nothing. I was surprised Fearghus hired a human male is all. And the fact he also wishes me to marry Aidan. I thought it very strange for him to offer help.” It may not be the whole truth, but close enough.
Even if I believed Fearghus would set me up to fail, I didn’t think any of us would be hurt. I could not return home without the power. The future I had waiting with Aidan was more than enough incentive.
“I agree we should not trust this human. Fearghus may have arranged for him to cause your failure.”
Jack’s mouth was set. He would make it harder than necessary.
An excellent lead in to what will clearly be a perilous quest!

Oh! I hope Kyle is the Kyle because Aiden already seems like he could use a punch to the crotch. Awesome Teaser! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Sierra,
DeleteLOL Aidan needs a lot more than that! His character came out nicely when thinking of someone who needed punched.
A fascinating adventure! Aidan seems like a bit of an ass, though.
ReplyDeleteHi Lil,
DeleteAidan is definitely a great bad guy. :) He's not the worst one though...
