Shayla, Princess of the Fay, must begin the journey to discover her true power by leaving the island. If she's successful, she will become queen. Her plight won't be an easy one, for there are those who would use Shayla as a means to solidify their own position of power.

Kyle, Shayla's guide in the human world, is destined to bring hope to the Fay even though his own future seems bleak. With Kyle by her side, miracles can happen, offering the promise of the return of the magic.

Once that happens, nothing is impossible.

TEASER

As I entered the garden, the smell of succulent roses and jasmine infused me. I continued upon an emerald and ruby path, glinting like a wine-filled goblet. Gliding over pearls and bright quartz, I headed for the waterfalls, the soft lining of moss caressing my feet.

My heart faltered. He was human.

Excerpt

“What do you see now?”

He was still in the pool of water. I was struck with a horrible idea. “I need to ask you a couple things first.”

“Anything, sweetheart.”

“Can you see where I am now?”

“You are lying on a huge bed made of silver and wood.”

It was as I feared. He could see what was around me. “You mention relaxing, right? Are you asleep, dreaming your bath, or awake?”

“Awake. Aren’t you?”

“No. I am asleep. We must be very careful. If my people knew you could see where I am, they would punish me and hunt you down.”

“You keep speaking of your people. Just who and what are they?”

“I cannot reveal that, but I am a true Princess. I would like to join you, but it is best I do not. The first time we met, what happened to you? Can you explain how you got there, and what happened after?”

“Sure. I was walking through the woods when I saw you under a canopy of trees. You opened your arms to me, and I wanted nothing more than to touch you. The next thing I knew, we were in dark blue water that glowed. After, when I was back in the forest, my clothes were wet and lying on the ground beside me.” He paused. “What are you thinking?”

“We are in serious trouble. I will join you in the water, but only for a moment, then I must go. I promise to try and return though. I need to know something, and the only way is when I am awake.”

“You make a promise of seeing me again?”

“I do not think either of us could stop, even if we wanted.” I did not want to stop. If not for his life being forfeit, I would stay with him as long as the Gods allowed.

“Come and tell me goodbye, then.”

I crossed over to him, letting the water soak through my gown, and did what I desired to since we’d first met. Whispering leaning over him, I caressed the sides of his face, and brushed my lips against his mouth. His lips were warmer, fuller, and more real than I ever imagined. He was made for me. Everything I ever wanted in a mate, kept inside my dreams where we could not be hurt.

I jerked away and turned, wishing to end the dream. Awake in my room, I guessed right. My gown was soaked. What we had done affected both physical worlds. This was a gift and a curse, and there would be repercussions. I had everything I could want but was in the gravest danger of my life.

COMING FACE TO FACE

As the plane lifted, I wondered for a second time, how my Father and Fearghus managed to schedule our trip. They must have used all the contacts the Fay knew in the human world. And I yet wondered, if all contact had been broken with humans, how we were staying current with their lives and history. Who would they be in touch with to plan all this in such a short time?

Some of us knew more than others. I remember Fearghus was once questioned about the Elder’s vast knowledge of the human world. The reply was orderly. “We own a great deal of property there. We must keep track of it using various resources.”

I had not believed the excuse then, and really did not believe it now. How could they know so much and not have an unknown motive? Why the curiosity?

At the airport, Jack, Aine and I took our luggage from the crew. I hoped…no, I prayed the man we were to meet was not my Kyle. I did not want to see his striking face coming toward me and breaking my heart.

The Gods however had their own agenda. He stood, straight as an island tree, eyes wide. My mind numbed and turned to fear for both of our lives, while realization and a look of triumph emerged across his face. I stepped backwards as he strode with intent to us. To me.

“Kyle?” Aine asked, coming up beside me.

“Yes ma’am. You must be my noble guests. I believe I am to show you this.” His voice, a melody.

The Gods were in full force. In his hand he held the miniature of the Goddess Morrigan. Trying not to sound giddy and terrified I interrupted, my voice rasping out too harsh, too loud. “Thank you, sir. Shall we leave now?”

“Of course. If you will follow me.” The deep timbre was replaced with a cold, professional sound.

I only hoped he would understand why I could not be more open. I thought I saw pain in his cobalt eyes. Oh Gods! Does he not realize this is killing me, too? To have him stand in front of me in the flesh and not touch him, show him how I feel. Knowing I had no choice but to heed my head, knowing an eternal love was growing deep within my chest. To know, even though I could feel his breath on my cheek, I could not lay the barest of caresses on his hand or show him the emotions trying to spill its way from my soul.

We followed Kyle in silence, through the clanging airport and to a sky-blue pickup. My favorite color. The height and ruggedness of the truck seemed out of proportion with my world and our need for secrecy.

After he placed our luggage securely in the uncovered cab, he opened the passenger side doors for us. Aine and Jack climbed into the back, while Kyle helped me to the front. His hand was tense and clasped almost painfully on my arm.

“Sorry if it’s not fancy enough for you.” There was an odd pause as we locked eyes. “My home is in the hills. Truck and horse are the only way.” He smiled as his eyes burned with a craving to inflict as much hurt as he must have felt.

I controlled myself. Barely. Why is he mad at me? I would not have chosen to cause him any more pain then he already faces. He is too bold. I spun out of the truck and plopped into the back next to Jack, pulling him next to me. If Kyle wanted to be childish, I would be childish.

What was it a human would say? Their expressions were stellar. Jack grinned from ear to ear, the heat of his ego rising like molten rock from Fay Mountain. Kyle was cooler than ice, silent in fury. Aine looked confused and hurt. The long ride was uncomfortable. I am not sure who would have broken first. Thankfully, Kyle pulled to the side of the road.

Excerpt

As I entered the garden, the smell of succulent roses and flowed through my body, while the path itself was soothing with vibrant green and deep red stones. Gliding softly over the smooth stones, I headed for the waterfalls, sighing in pleasure as the soft moss lining it caressed and soothed my feet and heart. In all of Fay Island, this was my sanctuary. A place I could be myself, forget royal burdens and courtly duties. When I was younger I often found myself drawn here to search for my perfect mate.

In the center of the Garden, a mist was gathering against the steep rocks. Staring down I contemplated the brilliance flowing beneath the spray as it cast a shimmering silver hue in its depths. The sound of chimes filled the air as the falls began to play a sweet melody all of their own.

“They say when the water is such color, magic is trying to reach out to a Fay,” Aine said.

I turned and took in her beauty, as always she was hidden behind a garment of deep red, this time however the hood draping her face was pulled back. I was struck at the mane of red hair flowing around her body; it reminded me of silk caressing the radiant face now in full view.

As I contemplated Aine, I could not understand why she hid behind the red shroud. Her beauty was astounding. “If the water changed for one Fay, then who is it? You and I are the only ones here.”
“It is waiting to receive you. I have been here for some time, and the water did not change until you arrived.”

The look of poise on her face made me wonder if she might be right. I turned toward the water, sensing it call to me, beckoning me to step in.

I do not know whether it was Aine’s faith, or the water itself, but I waded in before I could stop to think. The water swirled around my body, stroking each curve with an intimate caress. I expected it to be cooler as I waded further in, but instead, it grew hot. Aine had been right. The water was responding to my touch, my intimate power. I was sure of it. Since my birth, there had not been a gift of magic such as this given. For whatever reason, I was to receive an old and precious gift.

“Do not be frightened, Princess, let the water carry you, comfort you, love you. Let it give you it’s offering in great joy. Know that, of the entire Fay, you are the one to receive a blessing from it.”
Aine’s words made sense. The water’s magic wanted to love me, caressing my body with its essence, giving me the bounty it was. It was now up to me to love it in return.

Taking her words and my thoughts to heart, I closed my eyes and opened my arms. The water pushed against my thighs, and I lifted my feet in response. Cradling me in lover’s arms, the water held my head above itself, before carrying me into its depth. Not once did I panic. I trusted the water as though it were my lover. The magic of the moment provided all I needed to survive. Opening my eyes, the water radiated silvery magic and faded to midnight blue, pulsating with resilient energy. Part of my mind screamed of the danger surrounding me, but my heart could only rejoice.

At that moment, I saw him. His eyes were the deepest blue I had ever seen, with silver flecks shooting out from the center of it, the same vividness as the water surrounding us. A ring of forest green surrounded the blue. The coal black hair made his creamy skin rich. Everything about him left no doubt to any of my senses. My whole body vibrated. From his chiseled features, to his broad shoulders, he was everything I had ever dared dream. He emanated male. I could only guess at his height, but he seemed taller than life to me.

My enchantment had caught me off guard. His height compared to a male Fay in his prime, and I wondered why I had never met him before. In reaction to my query, his surroundings changed from an island forest to a small town. The buildings were constructed of a wood I knew had not been made by Fay, but by man.

My heart faltered. He was human. Nothing was to come from these feelings building deep inside of me.

Fay have been forbidden to mate with humans, and the few half bloods left were either from before my Grandfather’s rule, or descendants of those who had ventured into the mortal’s world.

The water grew intense. Had I said or done something to upset the magic? The image of the man clarified again. He was in the very water with me. From within, I could not stop the heat from rising, as I watched our bodies begin to entwine with each other. Each kiss he placed upon my skin burst like sunlight through the mists.

My breasts lifted to his lips as the climax began to grow in my abdomen and move lower. My entire body became heavy with a need I had not felt before. With each powerful stroke inside me, my skin grew hotter. It echoed the inferno surrounding us. I had only heard of such impulsive things happening between the Gods and Goddesses. When our bodies peaked, his grip told me he felt each sensation I did.

I only hoped he thought he was dreaming, or I would begin to fear for his mind. According to tales from the Elders, humans no longer believed in Fairies, and only a few believed that magic existed at all. Most of those thought magic evil.

He reached out. Not toward my image, but to me, seeing through the mist as I had. The steel in his eyes concerned and frightened me…

Chapter Six
LEAVING FAY ISLAND

I met my father and the others at the gates to our city. He had decided we would be safe leaving by boat. The portal was quick, but there was no guarantee a human would not see.

He pointed to a pocket deep inside the small purse I would carry. “I have concealed currency for you, but if there is a need for more, there are accounts set up all through Scotland that you can draw money out of. When you return, you will have to use magic to find the island.

Be careful. Do not let anyone see, or the Gods forbid, follow. Be swift in your return, Daughter. We shall miss you.” Father embraced me., then turned to the others. “Take care of yourself and the women, Jack. Aine, guide her as best you can. She may need your sight. I am counting on you both.” Father kissed my forehead and stepped away.

“Yes, Aine. Guard her virtue well. I do not wish to have my bride pregnant with another man’s babe,” Aidan yelled from above us.

One of these days, he is going to push me too far and I will hurt him. I ignored Aidan and turned to Father and Fearghus. “Take care yourself. I shall miss you. Fearghus, I hope to restore your faith in me, and bring back my true power.”

“We shall see, Princess. When you arrive in Ireland, you will take a plane to Inverness, Scotland. A man will be waiting for you. He does not know your true self, of course. He believes you to be a noblewoman, so behave as such.”

“Yes, Fearghus. I shall not embarrass you or my people. How will we know him?”

“His name is Kyle, and he will carry a miniature of the Goddess Morrigan. Ask to see it before you follow him.”

I nodded. Wait was it possible, Kyle? It could not be him. Fearghus frowned as he walked away. Not wanting any other surprises, I marched down to the pier and stepped into the boat.

The motorboat was sleek with a powerful engine in the stern. I overheard it had been purchased for speed and maneuverability, not to spend time in. It looked new and unused. Who had bought it, and how, if we are now not allowed contact with the mortal realm?

Father blessed us, as we cast off. “The island will be in the same spot for a fortnight. Good luck, Shayla. May the Gods be with you.”

It only took a couple of hours to reach Ireland. Father and Aunt Brigit must have moved Fay Island as close as they dared, while we slept. None of us spoke. Even the usually garrulous guards chose to remain silent. I had plenty of time to think about Kyle, but I hoped the Gods were not so cruel. Would he be waiting for us at the airport? How would he react? I yearn for him more than anyone or anything, but his life is more precious than any of that.

The motorboat banked and we got out.

“Now that we are alone, will you tell me why you were so stunned over the man we will meet?” Jack’s voice vibrated with the frustration I felt. Maybe he knew something I did not. Being 250 should have benefits.
“It was nothing. I was surprised Fearghus hired a human male is all. And the fact he also wishes me to marry Aidan. I thought it very strange for him to offer help.” It may not be the whole truth, but close enough.
Even if I believed Fearghus would set me up to fail, I didn’t think any of us would be hurt. I could not return home without the power. The future I had waiting with Aidan was more than enough incentive.

“I agree we should not trust this human. Fearghus may have arranged for him to cause your failure.”

Jack’s mouth was set. He would make it harder than necessary.

La Roe's Curse 4 Star Review from Why I Cant Stop Reading

Why I Cant Stop Reading
The Good, The Better, The Books.

So I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was in no way compensate for my opinion.
So here are my 4 reasons for 4 stars:
Emerald La Roe is an absolutely amazing character. I love the way she was written, how her story was explained and the way she just basically is. I love the way she dealt with what she was given (which I felt was rather realistically) and I loved how easy she was to get invested in.
Ms Carver is excellent at world building. The way she described the characters, species and world was really well written I got lost in in completely.

Meet Stefan - La Roe's Curse #MFRWhooks

Author's Note

In last week's comments, I mentioned giving Stefan a chance to come forward. Since the book is written in 1st POV we have to rely on Emerald reading from Stefan's journal to get a look inside what he is thinking.

Stefan was initially the main male of the story but Emerald really does not like him for a large portion of the book. When writing the story I realized that unless something changed Stefan and Emerald were never going to reconcile.

Little did I know that Stefan's journal would sway one heart, Max, which as we know has caused several changes to occur that shouldn't have (or so I thought).

Since I hate getting lost while reading a book and this excerpt is combining different portions from several pages, I have decided to add a little bit of author guidance.

In the excerpt below, we start with Stefan's journal, Morrigan mixing in again and end with Emerald's acceptance, well to the potential cure anyway.

For those of you who have read the previous excerpts with Violet included, you will understand that the fact Violet is possibly pleased is a a miracle in itself! Violet was a character I had not intended on but became a force to be reckoned with by both the characters and myself.

Excerpt

Conroy was waiting to escort us into the dining room. Violet was sitting at the head of the table with two place settings one on each side of her. “Come sit. There is no reason to be shy here.” Max took the one on her left while I took the other side. “Now, let’s have a lovely dinner, then you can tell me all about yourselves. I have to confess I have never met a werewolf before.”

We followed her lead and talked of nothing important throughout  dinner, when we were finished she led us into my father’s old study.

“Would either of you care for an after dinner drink or some tea?”

I knew it was a test, so I answered in my most professional voice.

“Coffee would be lovely, thank you. Cream and sugar please.”

She gave me a look I couldn’t read. “Very good, my dear. You will make a lovely La Roe.”

“What do you mean a lovely La Roe, I am already one?”

“Of course you are my dear, but being a La Roe is and means more than just a name. You must carry yourself as it now benefits your station in life. The Isle of Man is now part of Great Britain also Northern Ireland, and as such, you are now accountable to both of them. You are considered one of the last of royalty left here and must behave as such, your people need you to guide them throughout life and the courts.”

“Courts? What are you talking about? My father was a duke, but I cannot claim the title Princess gained from my marriage, no one can know I am still alive.”

“Your being a Princess is exactly what I am referring too.

Excerpt

Violet cocked her head at him before saying sarcastically. “Calm down wolf boy, or else I’ll put you outside.”

I sat there stunned before I had to ask finally. “How did you know? Just what do you know about us?”

“Why my dear I have the gift of sight and knowledge, I thought you would have guessed by now. I saw you finally returning home and a wolf was your escort, I have to admit though, I did not expect the wolf to actually be a werewolf. I thought you just had a real wolf as a pet. You know it is not uncommon for a La Roe to have a familiar as witches do.

Your wolf is correct about my behavior though, every vibe I have gotten from you, said you were a sweet girl. I just forgot that in my anger, and for that I am truly sorry. I knew then and still know now you must have had a good reason for not returning, and your reason for still roaming this earth does puzzle me greatly, no other La Roe has been cursed such as you are now.”

I sat there and thought of all she had said, when I noticed the room again; I could swear it was my old room. Curiosity getting the better of me I had to ask. “I know this is completely off the subject, but I just have to know. This is my old room isn’t it?”

“Of course, it is silly child. Well I guess you aren’t exactly a child, now are you? Enough of this though, I will allow you two to get settled in, then you may join me for dinner, it is promptly at seven o’clock, and not a moment later, the attire of course should be formal, to celebrate your return.” With that, she left the room.

I looked over toward Max, and he just shrugged before beginning to chuckle. “Hey, don’t look at me, she is your family, not mine.” He was laughing even harder now.

“And just what is so funny about that, may I ask?”

When Emerald La Roe ran away 300 years ago, she had not planned to return. However, after repeated dreams from Goddess Morrigan, Emerald finally realizes she has no choice. Emerald not only finds a magical sword waiting for her, but her dead husband also.

It seems Stefan O’ Duff wants’ reconciliation and help to cure the curse they share. Emerald would rather see him dead than be with him again, she has someone else to consider though. Her new love, Maxwell Howard a werewolf, who through sharing blood with Emerald, now faces the same fate as Emerald and Stefan. For the cure to work, Emerald has to put her hatred of Stefan aside and consent to share his bed again.

Can Emerald put 300 years of anger aside to save them or will she sacrifice all their futures and kill him as she swore to do?

Before I could think of a way to explain, the knocking started up again.

“Oh, hang on a minute.” I could hear him moving around the room, before he finally answered the door. “Yeah what’s so urgent?” He sounded upset as I heard the door open.

“I need to change the bandages on her eyes and see how her throat looks this morning, or should I say this afternoon. She also has to drink more of this tea today, about every four hours should do.” I listened to Ruby explaining to him.

She reminded me of an old mother hen. Normally I would have found it funny, but since I was the one on the receiving end, I just couldn’t see the humor in it.

“Ruby wants to look at your throat and change your bandages, is it all right?” Max was saying while I felt him slip a silk robe on me. I guessed it was the one he gave me, since as far as I knew he didn’t have one, not to mention the fact it fit me perfectly. I could feel him watching me, while he waited for my answer, nodding my head yes, I heard him let out a breath I hadn’t realized he was holding.

Hearing the door open again, I sat further up in the bed. “Well I was going to change your bandage, but it looks to me that you might want to shower first.” I put my hands up to my hair and must have made a noise because I could hear Ruby tisking me.

“Remember no pushing it, but I have to admit that the potion is working extremely fast, or maybe it’s just you.”

Not knowing what to do, I got up and started to make my way to the bathroom. I felt Max’s hand before he said. “Hey, I’ll help you take a shower then we can change the bandages, okay?” I nodded my head yes and stood there waiting for him. I heard him tell Ruby as the door opened again. “I’ll help her for now. You could make her something to eat though.”

Excerpt

What I saw lying on the floor stopped me dead in my tracks; there in the middle of the room was my sweet Katie. She was just lying there in something red. I crawled over to her then and saw the horrible gash in her stomach. The red I had seen was her blood, her life pouring out of her. I cradled her head in my lap and I began rocking her back and forth.

“No, Katie, not you. No, oh why God, why her, why did it have to be her?” I screamed out loud.

Even through my pain, I could hear Max coming up the front steps. I didn’t even want him around. I felt my power flare up. It consumed me, and all around. The only thing I could think of was no. No one was hurting her again. The world began spinning then, and any control I had was gone. I saw Katie’s grave again only this time it was covered in her blood. I stared down at the ugly hole, where her stomach should have been. Trying to see her whole again, but my mind could not, would not, get passed the blood. It’s her blood. Someone did this to her. I swear with everything in me. I’ll kill whoever did this to her.

“Do you hear me, you are dead, and you just don’t know it yet. I am going to kill you. I don’t care now if I have to walk this world for an eternity. I will find you and kill you. Your life is forfeit, it belongs to me now, and I want you dead. Do you hear me? DEAD!” I screamed with deadly menace to the empty room and knew he had heard me. Knew I was coming for him, he also knew I would never stop until he was dead.

I barely heard the door crash in, one moment I was holding Katie and the next someone was trying to take her away from me. Without thinking, I pushed them away from us with only a thought. The room was growing brightly now, almost a forest green, the same brilliant color of my family’s crests. The light had grown so bright. It was hurting my eyes. I closed them to the growing pain.

I could feel my hair flaring out around as though it was a living fire. My last conscious thought was, “I was too late to save someone I cared about, again. Someone else was paying because of me.” I knew the darkness was swallowing me and I was grateful for it. Welcomed it. Knowing I wouldn’t feel the pain of her loss cutting my heart in two.

When I came to, I could feel someone sitting next to me. “Miss, can you hear me?” I heard a man asking me. Each time I tried to answer them, my throat felt as though there were a thousand of tiny pieces of glass slicing it. Placing my hands to my neck, I tried to explain what was wrong.

Review: Horse Mountain Shifters by Sierra Brave

Click The Covers Below To Find The Book On Amazon

I absolutely loved this series, even though each book can be read as a stand alone I highly recommend that you read them in order. Each book gives more description about the mountain and the characters that live there.

I found several parts funny in each of the books. I got angry with them, sad with them and even wanted to smack a few. Each of the women had their own strength and the men who fell in love with them were perfectly matched.

I had never read a were-horse shifter series before and I enjoyed the way the author weaved their world. I would highly recommend Sierra Brave to anyone who asked for great shifter story.
