Excerpt

My Father’s face was emotionless, but in their shiny depths, his eyes held the pain he was going through.
“Father, can I ask you something?” I had spoken softly so none would overhear us.
“What is it, Shayla? What’s the matter?”
“Why did you allow the council to choose for you? I miss Mother greatly, and marriage to Aunt Brigit would have torn her apart. Why not choose an ally or friend?”
“Your Mother and I promised on our wedding day, we would never choose to marry another if one of us died without the other. A testament to our love, we had this written in our vows. I must admit, I was hoping the council would have chosen someone other than your Aunt. But fate has other plans.”
“Fate, Father? I have never heard you speak of your own fate before.”
“I am not speaking of my own fate, daughter. I speak of the fate of all Fay. Your Mother was right. We are dying as a people. I just wish I had told her when she was still with us. She had been right, and now it is too late.”
One tear slipped down his face. I knew then, though my loss was great, his was terrible. Witnessing the love my Father would carry forever for my Mother, I thought of what she had told me.
“What is wrong Shayla,” Father asked. “Why do you now look so sad?”
I told him what Mother had wished for.

“My sweet, sweet daughter. How I shall miss you the most. I am sorry to leave you this way and have only one wish left in me. I shall share it with you.”
“What is it, Mother? What do you wish of me?”
“I ask that you watch after your Father and yourself. My wish, however, is for you. I wish for you to find love, my daughter, and not just any love, but a love like your Father’s and mine. A love greater than all things and all time. A love to keep you warm on a cold night, to give you light in the bitter darkness, to fill your body and soul when you feel there is no joy left to be had. Your heart’s desire, your deepest secret, your sleeping mind’s cry, your true love. When you find your true love, let nothing, or no one stand in your way. Let the Gods themselves guide and protect it, while the Goddesses nurture it and tend it, until it overcomes anything and anyone around you. That is the wish, and the last thing I ask. A great love for you, my daughter, greater than any man or woman has ever known.”
I then told my Father how I felt. “I cannot fulfill her wish. I have searched among the Fay, and none yet call to me, to see the woman behind the Crown. None know my deepest desires, my darkest secrets, or the things that frighten me most. Not one Fay, not ever.”
