Excerpt
“I am fine. Just very tired is all.”
She frowned, not believing a word I had said. “Perhaps you should see your reflection, before making such statements.”
She took a mirror from her purse and handed it to me. I had not realized, until then, how diligently I avoided my own reflection. Inside, I saw a desperate and dying woman looking at me. My eyes were puffy, and my nose red from crying. There were dark circles under my eyes, and their color duller than stone. My face no longer held a soft, happy look.
But the thing that frightened me the most was the translucent pitch of my skin. As I stared, I realized I looked as though I was already fading into nothingness.
I have to live, at least until my people are safe, and I know they will survive.
I almost laughed.
Even if I did find my true power and return home in time to set the Law aside forever, I would not know if my people would survive. Aidan and Brigit could disappear from the face of the planet, and my people could still die out. No one can stop Mother Earth and Father Sun if they truly wish for us to cease to exist.
“I can see your image has frightened you as much as it has us. We know you have begun to fade.”
“Yes, and there is nothing either of us can do about it. The fates have sealed my destiny, and two Death’s Heads anticipate my arrival.”
I studied my reflection as I told her what had happened. I needed help, and it was time everyone knew. Maybe we could all do something to save my people. From the front seat, Jack and Kyle listened to my every word. I realized this was a way for Kyle to know everything without me breaking my people’s trust. He may not understand everything he was about to hear, but at least he would know the entire truth. I used the story to my advantage, and when I had finished with the Death Deities, I started recanting my past. If Jack or Aine knew what I was up to, neither of them had let on. As I spoke, I could hear Jack’s sudden intakes of breath, and feel Kyle’s erratic driving.
Very proud of my daughter, who made the new trailer for me.
