 Fay's Wish by Dee Carver

Shayla, Princess of the Fay, must begin the journey to discover her true power by leaving the island. If she's successful, she will become queen. Her plight won't be an easy one, for there are those who would use Shayla as a means to solidify their own position of power.

Kyle, Shayla's guide in the human world, is destined to bring hope to the Fay even though his own future seems bleak. With Kyle by her side, miracles can happen, offering the promise of the return of the magic.

Once that happens, nothing is impossible.

Excerpt

This was a cleansing place, a place to refill an empty soul. Aine and I were not the only ones to be content and amazed. Kyle’s breath quickened, while Jack thanked the Goddess for nature’s perfect gift. I understood Kyle’s revelation. This was where I would receive my gift. I also understood Jack’s need to praise the Goddess, for surely her presence was still here, stronger than ever.

Bells chimed a tender whisper on the wind.

“Come to me, Queen Shayla. Come and receive what I have waited so long to give.”

“We need to cross the lake now; she is waiting for me.”

I pointed to the small, white boat at the edge of the lake. No one questioned its remarkable presence, or my request. They only did as I asked. I climbed in, and once we were seated, Kyle began rowing our way across. I hoped he would go faster, but the rigid line of his back bade me be patient.

Instead, I faced my reflection in the water as it undulated by, contemplating death without fear, knowing that even if this boat were to overturn, a drowning would not stop me from reaching the island. Somehow, I would always make it. I would become a fish and swim.

On the island, we made our way to the center easily enough. Silver stones and golden sands led us to the cave’s entrance. I strode to the sacred opening I knew existed behind its vines of jade and turned to the others before passing through the curtain.

“This is as far as you all can go. I have to go the rest of the way alone.”

I swept the ivy aside, and made my way in. Painted cranes of all sizes dotted the walls, each prepared for flight. I turned back once to gaze at the entrance, but there was only blackness.

“Come, Queen of the Fay. I do not wish to wait any longer to give you what I have waited lifetimes to pass on.”

Her voice became closer with each step I took. Emerging through a jewel-strewn doorway, I finally bore myself into her presence. Corra wore the appearance of a crane. Incredible, she was as white as snow, and at least ten feet of pure marble.

“Step closer, Daughter of the Gods. Step up and claim your true power, my Child of the Brides.”

Excerpt

I awoke standing in the throne room, my Father in front of me weeping. An ethereal breeze lifted strands of my hair as I looked around the expansive room. No one else was there. Slipping silently to his side, I laid my hand on his quaking shoulder. “Father, why do you cry so?”
He shuddered and gaped at me, surprise and fear on his loving face. It nearly broke my heart.
“I do not understand. How are you here before me, when I know you are gone for all time?”
“Gone…”
“I received word today of your death in the human world.”
Gone? His words echoed inside me like a yawning cavern, the torment and pain making me doubt my existence.
“I do not understand. Who would tell such lies to you?”
“Lies? I pray for lies. Even now, Jack and Aine travel by sea, bringing your body home. At first, I thought they were mistaken, for you did not fade. Then, I was reminded of the Fay who had fallen before you in the human world. They had not faded until they were brought home. The same is for you.”
Father had never been a fanciful or delusional man. He must believe in my death, yet I knew I dreamed.
“On what day did I die?”
He sobbed. “Your birthday.”
“But, how is it you are weeping for me?”
I got no response. Not being able to reach him to reason, I attempted to reason with myself. My birthday fell a week from now.
“He has been here for the last three days. I am the only one allowed to enter.” Fearghus stood behind me.
“You do not seem surprised at my appearance. Why is that?”
“You are not the first to die in no-Fay’s-land. You shall know unrest until your body is returned.”
“Die! I am not dead. Father said I died on my birthday. My birthday is not for another seven days. There is no limbo here, only a dream.”
“So…dream waking is your true power. Why do you not return home if your quest is finished? Before you truly die and all hope is lost?”
“Because dream waking is not my true power. I was able to do it before I left home.”
It was all the detail Fearghus needed to know, but his voice still grew feral as he stepped near to my ear. “Then you must hurry and find your true power. This is more than just walking in dreams; it is a glimpse into your future. A sign from the Gods of what is to come. I wished for you to learn your heritage while you are gone, not die from it. I give you five days. If you have not evolved by then, you should return no matter what.”
For the first time that I knew of, fear edged his will. “You know I cannot. I will not return to be given to Aidan, nor will I stand by while his family lays claim to what is rightfully mine.”
“I never wished Aidan on you, only for you to take your place as all Fay must do. As your Father did before you, and his Father before him. Rule us, Princess. Rule all the Fay.”
He came around to me. The determination in his eyes shook mountains. Drama for my benefit or his?
“You speak as though more than my taking the throne is at stake.”
“It is. My future is also at stake. I am fading but cannot or will not rest until you sit safely on the throne with your chosen King.”
I had an answer for him. I needed to believe Fearghus was concerned more for our people than I had given him credit for. “I give you my word as Princess of Fay, I will return in five days' time, with or without my power. You must also give your word to help me out of a wedding to Aidan.”
His forehead furrowed and his eyes pierced into mine, but he finally nodded. “On your arrival, if Aidan is not for you, then another suitable husband shall be chosen.”
“I wish I could believe that, but you know as I do, the other Elders must also say so. You will need to convince them. Will you? Can you?”

Writing Contest Do or Don’t? #MFRWauthor

When I first released La Roe’s in 2005, it was nominated for the Golden Rose Awards (which I don't believe is open anymore). Until that moment I can honestly say that I had not really considered being nominated for anything that big of a deal, yup I was wrong. It really was an honor to be nominated. As the years have gone on, I have entered a few writing contests, I have also suggested some to clients that we work with. However, there were a few things I considered before either entering them or suggesting them.

1. Who was hosting the contest?
2. What kind of marketing was done for those who entered and the finalist?
3. Categories? If you do not write that genre it does not make sense to enter it.
4. What’s the cost and can you afford it?
5. What is your goal? Are you entering to win or learn more about your writing?

I guess the biggest question is, can you handle if you lose? Not everyone can handle criticism even if it’s constructive. Winning the contest would be awesome but losing it can also be a good thing, if you learn something from it. Popularity contest are just that, but if the contest is judged on the quality of your writing, if its based on how well you told the story, can you handle it if they found areas you need to work on?

I know that years ago I had to learn the hard way that writing is a continual work in progress. I know that today, writing is a continual work in progress… man I sure miss Cindy! She’s on Vacation and I almost did not post today because she isn’t around to edit my writing because I know that everyone needs an editor.

The Most Amazing Friends And Family #MFRWauthor

Like most people there are several things in life that I do not want to do again, some were excruciatingly painful, while others heart wrenching.  One of the things that I never want to do again is be asked who would raise my children if I didn’t make it. Followed by a breast biopsy while being told for 3 weeks 'at this stage life expectancy is approximately one year'.

Granted it was one of the tougher trials in my life and the initial shock was a sucker punch. Walking down the hallway of the hospital had never felt so long before, which probably only took me a few minutes at most. The urgency of the doctor’s tone, the packets of information I carried burning away at me, the overwhelming need to escape what I had just been told frightened me.

We all have the fight or flight instinct in us and in that moment, flight was my initial reaction. It was as though I could outrun the doctor, the hospital, my own body. Then when I did make it outside, I had to make phone calls I didn’t want to make, tell people I didn’t want too, in that split second, I decided only a few would know. Of those that I told, some reacted as expected, they panicked at first but then asked me who would raise my kids, then offered to help raise my kids. It’s funny how the mind works. Being a single mom, I had already planned that out a few years prior. Others thankfully were praying with me and for me. If God was taking me to it, then He would see me through it.
Then came those I work with, my manager Cindy, she let me vent, she let me cry, then she let me get strong. She was there when I lost it again, then helped me to focus and make plans for the fight I had coming. Because I went from flight to fight and sometimes in the same few minutes of a single call. There was also Kayelle, she knew I was freaked out, but she also knew I needed something to help me focus beyond the doctors, testing and planning life. I am almost positive that she came up with extra ‘work’ that needed done. Only a couple other close friends knew what was happening, they kept my secret, they prayed for me, talked when I needed it and rejoiced with me when it was over.
Those that didn’t know, well it’s kind of hard to imagine but I forget sometimes that I did not really share what was happening… So, when it gets brought up in a what’s happened in your life and I start praising God for sparing mine, they tend to get a little upset I didn’t share before… sorry.

Now that I’ve written about it, think about it, I don’t know that I would pay to not go through it again… It taught me a lot. I know that if God can cure me of it, then He can cure me of anything. I know that if I am faced with a life-altering trial, I may want to run at first but in the end I will fight. That I have some of the most amazing friends and family a person could ever be blessed with… So, no… I wouldn’t pay or give anything to take knowing that away.

“Good, now on to more unpleasant things, and this time young man, do not interrupt. May I please know the reason you didn’t return home before now?”

I sat there and thought for a moment on how to explain my life and the reason I made the choices I made without having to go into detail about it all over again. I decided to answer her questions as she asked them, as simple as possible.

“The reason I didn’t return home right away was I didn’t know who I was or where I came from, until my 25th birthday. When I finally did know, returning wasn’t possible at the time.”

“All right, you have said that once before, but why was it not possible when you did know who you were?”

“Well for one thing I was and still am, cursed. Second, I don’t know if you realize it or not, but traveling then was very hard, dangerous and not to mention expensive.”

“So, you did not return as soon as you knew who you were because you were cursed or broke, why did you not or didn’t you take something, anything, with you for money?”

“I didn’t return because of the curse and I don’t know why I didn’t take any money with me.”

“Fine then, why would the curse stop you from returning, you must have realized your family would protect you?”

“Yes, I do know that, and knew it then. If your husband, who also happened to be the reigning monarch at the time, cursed you, would you place your family in that kind of danger, just to save yourself? I don’t know why I left or what happened. The fact I am standing here today, after drinking the wine that night, say’s itself the wine was poisoned, and my husband gave it to me.” I said husband, with nothing but pure venom in my voice.

She had tears in her eyes now. I almost felt sorry for her, but when you have lived through hell, pity is just too damn hard. “You’re right, I am sorry, I have no right to judge you. I do not know what it feels like to have suffered the way you have and have no way of feeling what you felt then or now. I do know what happened after your wedding night though, it is all in your diary, just not your fate.”

Feeling my breath catch in my throat, it couldn’t be mine. “Whose diary did you say?”

“Why yours, the one you left behind.”

Excerpt

There was a sweet looking woman sitting behind the counter. “This is Lupai and her husband Vasili the owners.” Paul said coming up behind us. I went to turn around to Paul, when a distinguished looking, older man walked toward me.

I wasn’t sure why, but I knew not to turn my back on the new guy. Something told me he would try to have me for lunch. I saw from the corner of my eye, that the woman had turned to face her husband. Without looking away from him, I saw the man give his wife a funny look. I wasn’t sure exactly what the look meant but when she turned back toward us, her eyes said one thing, while her smile said something else.

I also saw that I had been wrong her being sweet looking too. There was nothing sweet about her, and she definitely wasn’t very old either. Neither of them was what they appeared to be, I guess the woman realized I had been staring at them too long because she spoke up then.

“Welcome to our little place. It’s so nice of you to bring young folks with you Paul.” She paused while walking around the counter to where Max was now standing beside Paul. I hadn’t even realized Max had moved away from me until now, not good, not good at all. My attention is normally better than this, but something about these two struck me as different.

“And you Maxi, it’s been so long you have been to see us. Where have you been hiding yourself? It hurt me so much when you stopped coming around.” Max looked down at the floor then back up to her face. Max held his arms out then and when she moved into them, he gave Lupai the left side of his neck.

“I am truly sorry Lupai, I have been tied up with my business, I promise to make an appearance at the next full moon though.” When the woman backed away from him, Max came back over to where I was. The look he gave me when he reached my side, said he would explain later. He placed his arm around my shoulders before turning us to face Vasili once more.

“Vasili Pavel I would like to introduce Rose Jade, my mate.”

“Mate?” I asked to myself, but trusting his decision to make everything all right, I said nothing aloud. Looking at Vasili I had this strong urge to bow or something, as he held out his hand. I guess I had stood there too long. Because he suddenly took my hand in his, I was almost grateful for the hand. Almost.

Write What We Know #MFRWauthor

Hi everyone, well as usual things have been crazy chaotic but I am here for another edition of the MFRWauthor blog posts. This week’s prompt is an interesting one, well for me anyways. Before beginning to write this post, I would have said that very little or none of me was in my stories. However, after thinking about it some, I now know that’s not true.

https://www.amazon.com/La-Roes-Dee-Carver-ebook/dp/B07Q3PYQK8/
  • In my first book La Roe’s, I had a dream about a dress and since I cannot draw that great, I decided to write about the dress instead. That was most definitely a part of me.
  • Then I thought about the character and the time in my life the original version was written compared to now. The main character, Emerald, she works a lot. I did too back then and even more so now.
  • She is also extremely protective of her friends, which yeah one can say that about me. Perhaps even a bit ‘mine’ determination.
  • Emerald also has taken the hard knocks of her life and changed them into something else, I can say that has happened with me as well. She takes certain losses very intently.
  • The story may begin in the U.S., but it ends on the Isle of Mann, which is someplace I would love to visit.
  • Roses call to her and well my favorite flower is the rose.

In my second story, Fay’s Wish, the main character had recently lost her mother and that I can understand heartache all too well. She also found herself on a life changing journey which I believe that many people can relate too.

We often write what we know or want to know about, so it only makes sense that thinking back on the stories I’ve written that a part of me comes out in them. I think it’s our jobs as authors to make sure that we remain true to the character and let their voices be heard, not ours.

La Roe’s will be on sale during Amazon Prime Days (Begins Saturday, July 13, 2019, and ends July 20, 2019) and is currently available through Kindle Unlimited. Fay’s Wish is getting a new edit and potential rewrite depending on what my editor (PMInc Manager, Cindy) has to say, hopefully better than the first go around with La Roe’s.

Gardening? Yes, Please! #MFRWauthor

Recently La Roe’s my first novel was re-released, and we are currently working on the second book Fay’s Wish. As someone who works in marketing, I love the term organic growth, as a new homeowner and the granddaughter of a farmer, I love gardening, this year I get to do both!

This season we started our first garden in my new home and though tilling the soil was hard work, the rewards are so worth it. The vegetables have been planted and yesterday we picked our first two tomatoes. We also seem to have some sort of berry bush in the yard as well. Not sure yet what it is, reminds me of maybe a blackberry or raspberry gone wild so will just have to wait and see.

While waiting for time to plant, we went out and found the seeds we wanted, mapped out the area, and then talked about how fun it was going to be. We also found a couple of rose bushes already on the property, so began trimming on them some, and just basically got ready for the upcoming season. Now that the season is on us, each day my granddaughters and I go out with our little buckets and water the garden. They love being helpful, plus it gives them a lifelong memory and skill that they can one day pass along to their grandchildren. We of course also planted a flower bed for them as well, which all three granddaughters were there to help plant their own seeds, should turn into a lovely colorful spot.

Being a geek, I spend a lot of time on the computer and all through the winter and early spring months I waited anxiously to start working on the garden. The idea of going out, getting dirt under my nails, disconnecting from everything, just sounded like heaven to me and it has been. I love doing what I do. I love helping others with their websites, building organic growth, reaching new levels, but I also am a tomboy at heart too. So, throwing on a pair of old sneakers, blue jeans (because well mowing grass and getting on your knees at my age can be tricky) and just soaking up some sun, is some of the most therapeutic moments to my day. I am sleeping better at night, I am getting a chance to unwind and yes taking care of a garden, even one small as mine, can be considered work but it is enjoyable work and one that I am cherishing every moment of.
